Here’s your chance to be an informed resident of your community.  Make plans to attend City Day from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 3, at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  Admission is free, of course, and the parking is complimentary, too.  You’ll experience the wide range of services and programs that the city offers and get to meet the people behind the scenes.

Each city department will showcase their contributions via interactive displays, tours, kids’ activities and free “CityTalk” presentations (mini-seminars about some of the most frequently discussed topics).  We’ll also be taking job applications, if you’re interested in working for the City of Myrtle Beach.

Here’s a brief overview of what you can experience at City Day….

City Hall – Visitors will find out if they actually live inside the city limits or not.  Pinpoint your home on a huge map and learn about the city’s boards and committee.  Attendees can take selfie using the Public Information’s selfie frame.

Neighborhood Services – It’s “A Wonderful Day in the Neighborhood,” and LEGOS(r) will be provided to design neighborhoods on the spot.

Construction Services – Curious about the plan review process required before a business opens?  Find out about multiple inspections including foundation, wall, roof, plumbing, HVAC, frames, structural, fire safety and storm water.

Recreation Services – Enjoy games and activities for all ages.  Take advantage of the fitness equipment available to test your physical agility or participate in free fitness class demonstrations.

Finance and Utilities – Learn about the city’s $190 million budget, geographic information system, business licensing, utility billing and purchasing.  Attendees will get an inside look at the purchasing process, and children can enjoy interactive financial games.

Myrtle Beach Fire and Rescue – Children will enjoy the Kids’ Combat Challenge Course.  You’ll also get to experience the fire extinguisher simulator.  Fire engines, firefighter gear, and water rescue equipment will be on display.

Myrtle Beach Police – See the vehicles and equipment the department uses daily to keep the community safe and help combat crime.  Officers will provide information and answer questions.

Human Resources – Here’s your chance to apply for positions within the City of Myrtle Beach.  Summer employment opportunities are available.  Submit your application on the spot.

Planning – What should go on vacant parcels in the city?  Give us your thoughts.  Meanwhile, children will design their own city.  City Day visitors will have opportunities to learn more about the Planning Commission, Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, Cultural Arts Advisory Committee, and the Tourism Committee.

Public Works – From vactor trucks to Garbage 101, the Public Works Department will open your eyes about what’s above and below ground.  Kids of all ages will enjoy the big pieces of equipment that we use to clean the beach, collect your trash and keep Myrtle Beach operating smoothly.

Chapin Memorial Library – “Libraries are not just about books anymore.”  Sign up for a library card, learn how to download ebooks and enjoy “Storytimes” from the library staff.

We hope to see you there!
